5 Steps to Crafting a Memorable Personal Pitch!

You’ve probably heard it before: ‘Tell me about yourself…’

One of the questions that almost always kicks off a job interview. Nearly every job interview starts with this phrase, no matter the industry or type of job you're interviewing for.

To give your best answer to this question isn't quite as simple as it may seem. If you don't have a solid "job interview elevator pitch", you may create a bad first impression.

So, what is an elevator pitch?

It's a brief, 30 – 60 seconds pitch (or speech) that is designed to capture the interviewer’s attention and spark their interest in you!

Think of it as an opening statement that sums up:

  • WHO you are

  • WHAT you do

  • WHY they should hire you!

But why is it called an elevator pitch?

The name suggests that your speech should be short enough to deliver during an elevator ride, typically lasting no longer than 30 to 60 seconds.

Now you may be wondering where to start? See our 5 key points to consider below:

  1. Clarify your goal: Know your target field and the type of position you are applying for.

  2. Focus your pitch on your potential employer's needs: Tailor your pitch to show how you can benefit the employer. Highlighting your unique skills and what sets you apart.

  3. Grab the interviewer's attention: Use compelling facts and benefit-driven language to make them curious about you.

  4. Keep it concise: Eliminate non-essential details. Your pitch should be clear, focused, and to the point.

  5. Avoid jargon: Make your pitch easy for anyone to understand by avoiding technical terms and industry slang.

Practice your pitch!

Practice your pitch by writing it down and reading it aloud. Consider trying it out with friends or family for feedback!

Ensure your elevator pitch flows smoothly, is easily understandable, and feels approachable. Avoid using expressions that make you uncomfortable.

Remember, crafting an elevator pitch doesn't have to be stressful. Approach it like a commercial – keep it short, simple, and customize it for each potential role that you interview for!
